Bought a 2001 SC 4X4 back in Sept. 04. Truck has 77,000 miles on it. Had 73,000 when I bought it. Having previously owned a Dodge Ram, I was afraid of having Trans problems so I bought a 12,000 mile complete warranty. Well, my worst fears have happened. My trans starting slipping somewhat when I accelerated from 30 to 50 MPH. I took it into the local ford dealer today to have it check out. They called and told me that what I needed was to have the routine maint done on the trans and have the computer chip reprogramed and, (this is where it gets good) since this was a maintenance issue that it was not covered by the warranty. I told them that was not acceptable. I then asked what the cost was and they told me $450.00. Since I have bought 5 fords there in the last 2 years I went to my salesman and told him my sad story and he said that he would take care of it tomorrow.
My question to the board is, if I can not get Ford to handle this on my warrenty, since I have not but 10,000 miles on the truck, would I not be better off to buy a Preditor or another tuner and do the work myself.
Thanks in advance for your comments and help.
The mech. told me that the trans was not slipping but actually dropping down to 2nd gear instead of 3rd, or dropping 2 gears instead of the 1 that it should.

Reason: Forgot to tell the diag.
$450 is a rip-off for a chip. Second, a chip will not fix a bad tranny. If your clutch pack is slipping the firm-up caused by a chip will temporarily mask the symptom but not fix it. A Predator costs a lot less, if you do plan to get one, but remember that its a performance product, not a bandage for problems needing repair.
The Ford mech. did not mention anything about the clutch pack slipping. Said that the computer chip needed reprograming. Does this sound reasonable? I thought if it was the chip that I could use a Diablo or like and retune it myself.
