Replacing Bal joints

Need a quick answer, 1999 F-150 2WD - I'm replacing both upper and lower ball joints, will I need to use a spring compressor or will the shocks hold the spring in place.
Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum

The shocks will hold them in place.

The swaybar, shock, will keep the lower a-frame and spring in place. I RECOMEND that you rent a ball joint press to install the lower joints. Harber Freight has them, as well as some parts stores or rent a tool places. Car quest has the greaseable joints as well. You might need a tie rod seperator tool also, if it cant be had you might be able to pop the tie rod end lose from the spendel with a whack on the spendle where the tie rod it attached. Take the nut lose, not off the upper joint, and lower joint after you remove the tie rod. With a ball joint seperator tool breake the upper joint lose, then the lower. Make a wire hanger to hold the spindle assy. Dont let it hang by the breake line. Know your ready to press the joints out. Make sure your jack stands are located as close to the ball joints(lower) without getting in the way as poss. While your in there, get a cam adjustment kit for your front end alignment, its easy to install and will save you about $100 bucks a side at the shop. good luck. let us know how it goes. I am tired and going to bed. I think i got most the info i wanted to share..
