Al, I would bet some really big money that every used car place already has someone who knows how to roll back an odometer, or knows who can do it for them if they can't do it themselves. I've never thought of odometer tampering as a problem, just ignore what it says. My wifes car says 8,000 miles on it. We know that it is 208,000 miles. When you are looking at a car or truck for sale, you have to look at other things to get a feel for mow much useage it has gone through. A well maintained truck could be in great shape at 200K, a poorly maintained one junk at under 100K. If you don't feel comfortable, take the car to someone else, like your mechanic, and have him look it over. If it has many more miles than the odometer claims, he'll know. DF

I guess I would start with NOT posting the web address anywhere.
back in the mid 80's and early 90's I USED TO get $175.00 per vehicle
turning back odometers and putting the dashboards back together to factory specs. this practice is and was very common on lease vehicles
notice I capitalized USED TO I don't do this anymore. I had a rent a car place who would bring me 30-40 lease cars all the time when it came time to turn them back in at the end of the lease.
I am involved with a lot of used car places, and only know of two that have been tampering with odometers. Though the variance in value between a high and low mileage car is significant - most used car dealers do not bother tampering with odometers, as it is SO easy to prove. There is not a tampered car on the market that does not look tampered. Remember, it is only extremely high mileage cars, for the age, that are ever tampered with, and a 70,000 mile car does not look like a 30,000 car, no matter how good the detail was.. 70K of rock chips, sand blowing past, sun hitting it, rubber aging and other obvious signs make the odometer fraud the behavior of the sleazy dealer, who no body should buy from anyway. Anyone who does not know how to identify a tampered car, or who wishes to know of the the ways to spot age should email me, to get a complete list of things to check out.
This particular software unit is banned from import into the US, which means not much, but the rules for buying vehicles have to take into account, a digital odometer can be changed.. The odometer should really only be used to see how far YOU have gone..

update,
Thanks guys for the info and opinions. I saw this site in a post by a Lincoln owner who now knows his used Lincoln's odometer was reset or replaced with one showing a lower mileage.
If Ken and others think this post with the www addy should be deleted, I'm game.
BTW, here in Southern NJ about 10 yrs. ago, a large multi-make new and used car dealer was jailed for odo. fraud. He is now back in business in S Jersey.
Be well,
Al
I'll keep a look out for this at the lube rack. We put little stickers underneath the hood of each car and if it is there we can bring up all the maintenance history including mileage. I don't know how many times we have a recently sold used car come in to find out that the previous owner had all their maintencance done by us. It would be great to find an odometer on a linclon say that it has 55,000 miles on it and the last oil change was done by us at 123,000. We can print out entire maintenance historys. On our fleet accounts we even keep track of VIN numbers.
