I have a friend that just had some head work done on a 360 and put it back together and has 50psi oil press at the gage, but no oil up top. I asked if he got the rocker assy on correctly and put the bolts in the right holes, and gaskets on properly. He said yes to all three. Does anyone know of any other items that could be the culprit, he said he ran it for 5 mins with no sign of oil up top. I've seen guys burn up rocker assy's before, but 99.9% of the time it's always due to installing the rockers incorrectly. I have not been to his house to check on it though, I'm going by what he's telling me.
Well, have him double check that stuff, starting with the rocker arm assembly bolt.
I don't know why more people don't recommend it, but you should always shell out a few bucks and get (or build) an oil priming rod. Then prime the engine before starting. To me, this is very important and could save a motor in a situation like your friend is having. Plus you could do it when the engine is still on the stand if you want.
An oil priming rod for an FE is as simple as a 5/16" socket (1/4" drive), ground down to fit into the hole in the block. It will engage with the oil pump drive shaft and you can use an air racket or 1/2" drill to turn it (counterclockwise)... simple really...
If the rocker assemblies were taken apart, isn't it possible to wind up with the feed hole in the rocker shaft not matching up to the right tower (the one with the oil hole).
If they're the standard aluminum ones, they're all the same so that shouldn't be a problem. If they're the cast ones then yes, you need to make sure the bolt is matched with the correct stand.
