Well, I knew it couldn't all be roses and sunshine. My rocker assemblies are toast. Shafts are galled, and the oil groove in the rockers are a faint echo of their former selves. Direct result of sitting up and filling the shafts with crud. I knew there would be pain when I puled the passenger valve cover and it looked dry. So new shafts, but I found the guy at Square Birds just re-cuts the groove in the rockers themselves. Sounds pretty shade tree, but I do not want to be forced into a high performance and high $ valve train for a dump truck. Rocker Arms and Shafts
Just how f'd am I? I posted over in the FE forum as well.
Yay me.

I thought that was you that stated you have extra FEs laying around? Unless my memory is letting me down.
Thanks George, but I think I'm going to bite the bullet on this one. New shafts from Summit: $42 and there's a guy on Ebay with 16 new rockers for $200.
Used ones are a gamble if you cannot inspect them closely. I like how some sellers pull the rocker to the side to show the shaft is not worn. Problem with that is, the wear is on the bottom, not the top of the shaft. My shafts are perfect on the top, but you cannot flip them.
Sometimes CRS approaches but, I think I remember that last Century, the hot rodders were boring out the rockers. And installing bronze bushings to help with oiling and cutting down on friction.
You are correct on inspecting them. I have ran across some good ones on craigslist for nice prices though. At any rate, new ones sound like the safer better bet.
Post what ever ones you go with, nice to see options..
Got my new shafts and rockers in. The rockers are a heavier duty casting than the originals and they are night and day from the originals on how nicely they fit on the shaft. The old ones on the new shaft make a click noise wen you roll them side to side. New ones are dead silent. And the groove is pretty deep, so I'd say the originals are egg shaped now. Glad I made the investment.
Another possible source for rebuilt rocker arms might be worth calling Jasper . They rebuild just about anything. I used to be able to get them from Fred Jones Ford rebuilders but that was years ago.
When, I check the rocker shafts of every old fe I come across in the PnP JY they've all galled or with grooves. Then, I think to myself about all the BS talk some guys think the rockers get way to much oil then put in a oil feed reducer holley .090 jet under the rocker pedestal to send more oil to the mains.
In all the years these engines have been around I have never heard of them having an oiling problem to the lower end as a basically stock engine. Most of the wear problems are caused by "The Nut Behind The Wheel" not changing the oil and over heating. Just last year I helped a friend rebuild his 390 -63 T Bird, the crank was still in spec , the rocker arms were perfect , a re bore new cam, valves, guides and springs got it back on the road.
