We purchased a 2001 F-550 with 52k miles on it last march 2004. We had complained of 1 to 2 quarts use oil for months and reduced power low gas mileage and smoking in mornings. Six (6) weeks ago it developed a worse smoking problem and then an oil leak. We had it towed in on warranty. Dealer took 5 weeks to tell us the motor was dusted. When we bought the truck before we drove it off the lot we had a sever duty filter installed. sooooo. We have had all service done by the same dealer on regular schedule for maint. Yet they say the new filter is fine and no explanation for how it got dusted. We now hve 28k more miles on the motor. Could it have been dusted before we got it??? Can it take that long to appear?? We need a new motor this one is totally shot they can't even save the heads. Can anyone help with some answers??? Thanks
Yes it is entirely possible it was dusted before you bought it. Do you have documentation of your complaints to the dealer about smoking/oil consumption. You will want when, to who, and their responses/ actions to the complaints. From what you have written it sounds as if the engine had signs of problems since you bought it, so I do not see that the symptoms were delayed. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any more questions.
If you took the vehicle back to the dealer after you bought it for the oil problem the information will be in the computer. Do not argue with them in any way. Find another dealer you can trust, a friend or friend of a friend, have them check the computer and see what they find. Any vehicle info can be accessed by any dealer. Where you bought it may have known of the previous problem and are trying to hide it. The person that traded probably bought a new truck and could be a long time customer.
I Bought a '96 from a dealer several years ago (used) and the dealer showed me a checklist of the inspections etc. after all was said and done it turns out the dealer actually did little more than wash the truck and install a new windshield, the engine was OK but the front brake rotors were cracked, they certainly had not been inspected, and your warning signs here is the dealer keeping the truck so long just to tell you whats wrong you should have had an answer much quicker than 5 weeks. they basically don't want to replace an engine in a truck they just sold you. these trucks cost a lot of extra money because of the warranty don't let them duck out of their obligation to you.
Ask the dealer to run a complete history check (oasis report) on the truck all the way back to initial purchase. There may be something there to support your claim. If you post a request on the 6.0 fourm, I think someone there can run a check for you. You will need your full vin number, but don't put it in the post. Is the dealer refusing a warranty claim?

i wouldn't settle for anything less than a brand new 7.3L motor. especially that low of miles and under warranty. or tell them to kick you the 5k for a new one and rebuild yours for alot less than that.
Dealer says tough so does Fords Executive office people so. We have to figure out a problem. The dealer has the truck now in our 6th. week without it. and until we come up with the $$ to pay for motor it will sit there. We told them to put it back together and we will take home they said no.
Oh boy this is going to get ugly.
You better keep very good records of all correspondence, Who said what, in response to what, and what time on what day it was said.
THE DEALER SAYS TOUGH BECAUSE IN mT. WE HAVE A AS IS LAW FOR USED VEHICLES UNLESS IT QUALIFIES FOR THE FORD CERTIFIED PREOWNED DEAL. DEALER AGREES IT WAS PROBABLY DUSTED BEFORE WE BOUGHT IT. BUT THEY STILL HAVE NO LEGAL LIABILITY.
Well, im a used car dealer in texas and ill tell ya how it works. The only prayer you have is that Ford might fix it under warranty. There is absolutely NOTHING you can bring against the dealer. The only recourse you have is to complain to the Better Business Bureau.Do yourself a favor and dont assume the dealer knew it was dusted when he sold it to you. Maybe the original owner didnt even know. Maybe he did and didnt tell the dealer when he traded it in.There is an old saying in the car business, BUYERS ARE LIARS! That is the risk you take when you buy a USED vehicle.
You said you had it towed under warranty, right? So shouldn't the warranty cover the motor, or is it just out of warranty since they started messing with it? Yes, the purchase was as is, but a warranty to cover the truck means motor too!
