Shorty headers and a good flowing single exhaust should be a good setup. Whether you want 2 pipes in back or 1 doesn't really matter. True duals are a waste of money. Flowmasters are good mufflers. No one muffler or single modification is going to give optimum fuel mileage or performance. All the modifications work together. Also, from what I have been told a single exhaust will give you better torque than true duals.

Keep in mind that simply adding a Flowmaster will not in itself increase power, gas mileage or sound in some cases. On our generation of trucks however, getting rid of the stock muffler and finding @ 160,000 it has internal deterioration causing a pretty fair restriction WILL help in the economy/power. Not always, but it seems that those who experience an MPG increase/power increase may be replacing a defective muffler and actually get a significant increase. On a small block engine living off rpm's for power, a true dual system is beneficial, it allows the engine to operate and breathe better in it's optimum power band. On a big block engine where torque is the major requirement, I'd agree with TexasGuy001 for the most part. I haven't been that impressed with Flowmaster either, mostly due to the lemming mentality of Flowmaster=power. In an ideal situation Flowmaster=decibel increase and if that's where you're going it may be the best choice.
i have a bronco2 with headers and flowmaster 40 series coming out split-rear
i have ported intakes and heads etc..
i have gain about 25lbs of torque and about 8-15 hp gain with a 4 mileage gain as well keep in mind that i took off the 2stage cat system and just added straight pipe .
