acceleration issue
hmm...having a hard time finding the right place for this post - excuse me if I'm in the wrong place...I have a 1987 FORD RANGER 2WD, supercab, 2.9 L V6 engine, 5 speed manual...bought it recently with only 70 000km on it...I've noticed a problem though with brisk acceleration in 1st gear...it begins to accelerate OK (with the clutch fully engaged) but then at one point it always does this kind of "lug" before i reach the speed at which I'd shift to 2nd...On slow acceleration I don't notice anything...but when I kind of step it up it will always do this "lug" about a second or so after I get going...I've also noticed it the odd time when accelerating in 2nd, but not often...I've just changed the spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor and fuel filter and even computer (as it was corroded and no good) but the problem is still there...any ideas? I don't even know where to start!

I have an 88 ranger, 2.9L V6, supercab, 4x4, 60K, Ive recently rebuilt the top of the engine due to a blown head, and my truck still doesnt accelerate very well. 1st gear is always a quick acceleration, but after that its slower. Now if you've got really bad acceleration on the uppergears then it might be your engine isnt giving you all its power. Check the timing on it, make sure the O2 sensor is ok (bad one kills acceleration), make sure all the plugs are in the right order. Check your spark, if its really weak then you might consider getting a new ignition coil. I replaced mine and it really made a difference. The 2.9L on our trucks arent fast, but you should be able to accelerate without having much of a problem. Hope that helps.
