I think most people on here go with flowmaster, in your situation probably the 50 Series or maybe even 60. They claim that the 50, 60 and 70 will perform as well as the 40's.
I am going with Magnaflow for a few reasons. I talked to a guy here that is a Flowmaster dealer/installer, and he hates them. He tried to talk me into going with glass-packs!!! The over-all design, I just don't like, they put baffles inside to deflect the gasses. Where-as, Magnaflow is just a strait tube with a slight curve in it inside the muffler, with tiny perferated wholes all thru it to absorb all the crap that needs absorbed. Also, I prefer the sound of Magnaflow.
I'm not sure about which Magnaflow muffler would be comparable to the 50 series flowmaster, but im sure they could help you out over the phone. I simply told the muffler man what I wanted and he picked out the muffler he thought would fit. I am paying $60 a piece for mine.
I will find out Tues, what it sounds like and let you know. I am not wanting anything over bearing either, I just want a nice mealow sound, with some extra ponies to boot!!!
Another company I talked to said that the 4.6L Fords typically are quiter than the Chevy and Dodge.
Sorry, this is so long, trying to be helpful!!
I have learned a little more info about the differences in Duals and just replacing the stock muffler with a high flow performance muffler. It seems that unless you have some major performance modifications, that it is best to run a single exhaust pipe.
So I would have to give props to 2004Screw, he was right.
I guess old skool thinking isn't always right.
I think I will save my extra dough, and just have a si/do magnaflow muffler installed with dual tips coming out the side!!!!!
I'll let you all know how that turns out!!!

I would keep the existing stock pipe up to the muffler. Replace stock muffler with either SI/SO or SI/DO,(Depending on wether you want dual tail pipes or not. Performance wise, it doesn't really matter wether you go single or dual after the muffler.) then go with whatever size pipe they recommend for the tail pipes. Oh, and the tips.
I talked to my local Magnaflow Dealer/Installer today, and that was his recommendation.
The bad part is, I already had him order my stuff, and to re-order the SI/DO would take until Friday, and I am simply tired of waiting and just want this done. He assured me, I would have a good performing exhaust system that will last for many years.
Again, mine is costing me $250 bucks that's with duals all the way going into two seperate mufflers, then exiting in front of the RR tire, with tips. He said he was going to go with 2.25" to keep the low end torque up.
If you did yours the way I described, I'm sure it would be even cheaper than mine. If prices are comparable where you are to here, of course.
Hope this helps,

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I told you I would keep you up-to-date, so here goes....
I got my truck back today from the Muffler Shop. First thing I noticed was the tips. SHWEEEEEEET!!! He brought them out the side (just like the lightnings) and they look great! The tips are cut with an angle and perfectly flush and even with the side of the truck!
I fired it up and WOW!! perfect sound, exactly what I was looking for. From inside the cab (at idle) you can't even hear them. When your rev up the engine they come alive with a nice deep mellow tone!! I went for an interstate test ( i drive a lot of interstate miles and was concerned they would be too loud ), perfect again. At 70MPH they have that deep tone that is not to obnoxious, but definately there. Also, they really come alive when you dump the pedal into the carpet.
I was VERY please, the installer was dead-on accurate with the install. Best $276 I ever spent on my Truck!!!
Magnaflow has me sold from here on out.
I noticed a definite performance boost. Not a lot, but "seat of the pants" meter was showing it!!! About what was expected.
I think the installer was more pleased about it than I was. He waited for me to pull out, just so he could hear it taking off from outside the cab. Guess he was curious!!
Good Luck
I got....
2 - Magnaflow SI/SO mufflers. P/N: 12225 http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/m...iv_al_oval.asp
2 - Chrome slant cut tips. (I think these are just generic style tips)
14' - Aluminized Tubing 2.25".
Later I may go with a double wall tip or something that looks a little nicer, but right now it is fine the way it is.
The 12225 won't work as a replacement to your stock muffler. Your stock muffler is much longer. That would end up putting your tail pipe into your tire, or real close to it.
I would call magnaflow and tell them you want a muffler to replace your stocker, but keep everything else pipes and all. Or better yet, go talk to your local magnaflow dealer. Trust me that is the way to go, unless he is a goober or something.
They should be able to match you up with the correct part.

Or just have a little extra pipe welded on to make up the difference. Should not cost that much more.
