I have a rebilt 351W with 3500 miles. No matter where i set the timming the thing still pings on the freeway.I have new crane cam, lifters, push rods,MSD off road box,new auto zone vac.advance dist.,carter 625 cfm carb, edelbrock preformer intake,9mm wires, motorsport chain. NO HEAD WORK done yet.Do i need new heads?they are off a 94 351W F-350
Sounds to me like you need better gas! What are you running? regular is surely not enough, try putting the highest octane you can get (less race fuel) on the next few fillups and see if it helps. 91 octane should do, Sunoco has 93 I think.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Dec-02 AT 12:35 PM (EST)]Thanks nickmobile67 .But I did all that 87,91,93 SHEll,BP,Citgo every time same thing.Up hill, downhill don't matter. I mostly run 91 or 93 never ran any lower. IN time is at 14 BTDC, plugs are at .044 plugs are motor craft ASF 44C.I have no idea why it's doing it. thanks for trying.
On some combinations of engines and distributors, I have found you can't run 14 BTDC. The stock vacuum advance has too much advance. But if you retard the timing, it will really kill your low end punch. I would disconnect the vacuum advance for an experiment to see if the problem went away. If it does, I would buy an adjustable vacuum advance (I think crane sells them) and dial in as much vacuum advance you can get, without it pinging.
