I`m thinking of putting yea thats right a 7.3 in a ranger i`v seen 5.0s done but never a 7.3.I`m looking at one ex cab 4x4 auto.I don`t know if i`ll change to two wheel but know all must go.May be put a hidden wheel lift on it.This will be a long deal any in put on this .This would be show for my tow co
I haven't looked under the hood of a Ranger for a while but you might want to get your tape measure out and check engine compartment size and verify you have room for the replacement tranny which will have to bolt to the 7.3. Good Luck!
sounds like one H*** of a swap I've done quite a few 5.0 swaps and just dont see where a 7.3 would fit and I dont think that the frame could handle the weight and torque. I have cracked frames w/high hp 5.0's. plus you would need to put the radiator in the bed with a huge e-fan to keep'er cool.
Good Luck
I want to see pics if you get'r done
The only way I'd try it would be to set a ranger body on a f350 or f250 frame and axles. I would not compare a 302 to a 7.3 they are nowhere near alike the 5.0 is a 60 degree block and 7.3 is more of a 90 degree block. Sure I have seen 460s in rangers (off road only straight up headers) and I understand it can be done but I just don't see the point of doing a swap like this(alot of work and a lot of money). the 7.3 wieghts in around a 900 lbs by it self a ranger wieghts in 2500 to 3500. I just don't I would be very driveable. If I was going to attemp this I'd cut out the fire wall to put it farther back in the cab. I would also cut the front frame off and put somthing wider in there. (It would be much easier to put a 6.2 in a S-10 that motor is aleast a small block dimentally close to a 400-350-305-289-327-302-267). Are you trying to imitate banks cummins dakota? I really doubt you will be able to do this but please understand I not saying it can't be done. I would put a turbo 4 cylinder cummins in if it was me alot easier and more avaliable torque and horsepower.
Thats kind of a far fetched idea. I have never looked under the hood of ranger but i highley doubt theres room. Next you would have to do another tranny and rearened. Plus the rearend will be up in the air and the front will sag A hell of alot. The 7.3L wieghs a hell of alot more than a 5.0L and its a hell of alot bigger to. You would have to do all new suspension too. Good look with that one buddy.

I have though about doing a body swap.doner is a 90 f 350 7.3 4x4 auto being a tow co i keep every ford truck i impound if not paid for.I dont under stand 4cly cummins will have more torque or horses than a 7.3 you must be kidden!!!I have alot of 7.3 trucks and parts and want to do what cant be done.Body swap might be to easy???I don`t have a good ranger body yet still looking???Thanks for in put keep it coming.
Well maybe your right .Ill most likley do a body swap after getting much info from the net.I like to build things from time to time from just from junk. Thanks for your thoughts
A friend of mine has a 460 in a ranger,he had to add 2inches to the front of the truck. He ended up with a nice looking(white with red flames)fast little pickup.Oh yeah, its a 2 wheel drive.
frame will be to weak... front end to weak ... would have to use the front end out of a donor truck.. freind of mine did a 2wd ranger to a 4x4 460 ranger 3 inch body and had to cut the fire wall to fit the blower on it it got 3 mpg with it
all i can say is i'm doing a 351 500hp conversion to my old ranger to make into a street/strip truck.
I can barley fit that 351W in there with all the heat and air box removed and the inner fenders removed
But, i'm not gonna say don't try it.
thats what i got when some one said that motor won't fit in a ranger i went out and did it.
I had a friend put a Detroit in his 1980 3/4 ton. A lot of people said that couldn't be done either but he got it to fit after modifyihg the fire wall and beefing up the front springs along with a few other changes. A lot depends on how much you enjoy the challenge and how much time and money you have to spend to make the modifications.
I have built several small block and big block street legal rangers. I say that with a welder and a good plan anything is possible regardless of what others say.
Your truck of choice is so light to begin with all you are going to do is spin the tires unless you redesign the entire suspension. I personally would just build a potent little 302-347 (depending on budget) and put on some cheap tiger paw tires and go win some burn out contests.
