Im going to be doing a transmission and engine swap in the near future and getting rid of the current 3 on the tree setup ... should I switch it over to a 5 speed or a 4 on the floor? and how hard is it to do?

It's not too hard to swap it over, the clutch pedels are there so basicly all you need to do it cut a hole in the floor board or find a peice from a standard trans truck with the hole already in it. I personally like manual 3 speed transmissions keeps the floor clear, my 76 chevy is a coulmb shift HD muncie. I like the fact that most people dont know how to shift them so they dont ask to drive it not that I dont trust people with a truck that runs low 11's

the 5 speed will be a pain. I'd use a regular 4 speed.
you have to cut out the hole in the floor pan (a sawzall works nice), and get a transmission tunnel cover from a truck that has one (make sure you get the shifter boot, cuz they are expensive!).
after that, you might have to get another driveshaft (longer / shorter). I used a 3speed with overdrive and I didn't have to touch the driveshaft.
Not to Hijack the thread but Ive heard it is a PITA to swap to a 5 speed. Why is this? I eventually will swap my AOD for a manual and would rather have a 5 speed. Also I heard that the WC T5 from a stang is nearly impossible to use since the shifter sits too far back.
the T5's aren't really strong enough since our trucks weigh a lot more, and you can't use them with a xfer case. plus, it would be a serious PITA to adapt the clutch system.. (cable vs hydro).
The 5 speed is a pain because you have to use the concentric slave, which means changing the master to the newer slave. I don't think it would be hard, but it wouldn't be worth it just to swap in a M5OD. It would be if you were going the ZF5 route.
