02 Explorer requires 5W20. I have been using Mobil 1 for my oil changes and have been using 0W20 Mobil 1 from Wal-Mart because the oil bottle says that it is an acceptable substitute. Now I can't find the 0W20 Mobil 1 anywhere. Did they stop making it or am I looking in the wrong places? Is there an acceptable synthetic substitute? Thanks for your help.
You could use the Motorcraft Semi synthetic 5w20. I don't think you will get any better performance than that. For dollars and performance, it is hard to beat. You may be suprised. Do a search here on 5w20. Mobil 1 0w20 may actually perform worse in than the semi syn. I have not seen the Mobil 1 5w20 yet, but heard it is out there. If you really want synthetic 5w20 other synthetic options would be Redline, Castrol Syntec, or Amsoil. Of those three my choice would be Redline. In my opinion, synthetics are a waste of money when you can get great performance for $1.42 a quart.
i would recomend staying with the motorcraft 5w20.. this is the most affordable semisynthetic oil on the market. if you have the money and want a full synthetic for peace of mind... redline or royal purple are good choices. beware there are 5w20 oils on the market that are not semisynthetic... i recomend not useing these.
M1 0W-20 is still being made and shipped, if you can't find it, then call them at 800 662 4525 option 1 and they will tell you who's buying it and offering it for sale at the retail level in your area.
My local stores all have cases and cases of that stuff available, my problem is that they quit stocking 0W-30 and I'm having trouble finding that formulation anywhere. When I called, they told me that a lot of stores had switched their orders to 0W-20 instead of the 0W-30, I may have to go that route instead.
