400 Engine Project update

Hope everybody has had a Merry Christmas and a Safe New Year celebration.
We are in the process of mounting the engine on the dyno, we had to make front mounts for it. We dyno a lot of SBF so it was time. We hope by Fri. we will be very close to running the engine. Anybody in the area that would like to come and watch is invited. Contact if you are interested, we do not have an absolute day yet.

Tim, after reading through the results of the most recent engine masters challenge where they built really high compression engines (12.4:1) which had to run on 92 octane pump gas, 1 of the things I've been wondering about is the use of ceramic coatings on internal engine parts.

Every one of the top 5 engines rattled insanely from detonation due to the high compression ratio but according the builders that's what they planned for. They had ceramic coatings on the comb. chambers, piston tops & bottoms, valves, bottom of the intake manifold and moly based coatings on the bearings & piston skirts. Basically they said the coatings not only helped reduce detonation but also prevented the pistons from melting down due to the 18,000+ deg. spikes in temp that detonation can produce.

I realize these engines were built to survive a few dyno pulls not day to day driving but still, how durable are these coatings and do they have a place in a daily driver/occasional street dueler engine?

I like the socket head cap screws on the oil pump with safety wire! Good attention to detail.

I usually adhere the gasket to the pan. It is easier to scrape it off the pan than the engine if you have to drop the pan for some reason.

We've only had 1 oil pump come loose on a dirt track race car, and that was enough for me. I try to safety wire all engines oil pump and pickup if bolted on.
