460 swap question

I am putting a 460 in my 78 f 250 and the motor has a front sump oil pan. I am gonna put a 4 inch suspension lift under it. Will the oil pan have enough clearance or do i still need to convert it to a rear sump pan.

Is your truck a 4x4? If you are going into a 4x you definitely want the rear sump pan, especially when you are hill climbing...

No. with a 4 inch lift there is plenty of space between the pan and front axle, save your money.

You should be fine. If you do plan on going fast, or climbing you need to change it to the rear or dual sump design, pan kits are available from Ford Racing for around $100.

Hi guys, I have asked this question before on this subject and I have never quite understood the reasoning to the answers about the rear sump being neccessary for hillclimbing and/or offroading. I understand that while going up a hill the oil will be pulled to the rear of a front sump oil pan moving the oil away from the oil pump pickup. But what I dont understand is why is there no concern for going down a hill, slowing down, going down into a mud hole, etc., the things that would make the oil pool in the front of an oil pan. So unless you are going to buy an oil pan with baffles in it, i cant see why putting the extra expense into a rear sump oil pan and pickup tube is neccessary. The only factor in this debate would be if the change in oil pan was only for the purpose of fitting the vehicle. Im not trying to be difficult but I dont have extra funds to do things that arent needed. So if anyone could justify simply replacing a front sump with a rear sump I would like to hear them because there may be something im not taking into consideration. Thanks, Dave

Unhappy

I learned a hard lesson today. my 460 will not line up with my transmission with the pan on the engine because the pan hits the crossmember before it will get low enough to line up with the transmission shaft. so i decided to go ahead and order the ford racing pan conversion kit. I guess this will solve my axle clearence issue and let me get the motor in with out taking loose the transmission, transfer case and driveshafts. heck whats $189 more dollars when i have already put about 4 grand in it. Engine swaps ain't cheap
