Dodge Cummins

I heard this week that the vacuum pump and power steering pump are sold as an assembly, costing $1800 on the Cummins diesel. If one of the seals go bad, and an oil leak starts, the entire assembly must be changed. Has anybody else heard this???

That is what most dealers do. That price seems a little high though. I had that exact leak on my 02 at about 3000 miles, they replaced the entire assembly, and I think my receipt said it would have cost $1200 with labor if it were not a warranty job.

You can however, replace the two seperately, it just takes a little more time. I think you can get the PS pump from any parts store for something like $50, not sure on the vaccuum pump.

Not sure about the others, but the 6.0 has seperate vacuum and power steering pumps.

Are the vacuum pumps on the Dodges not electric?

Happy New Year Matt!!

No, the vacuum pump is gear driven from the timing chain.

You too, Bob.

That is really strange; wasn't aware that they were setup like that.

I'm certainly glad mine is electric.

Sorry to burst the bubble; the timing is all gears, no chains. Mounted up front is the vac pump, then a coupler at the shaft connects it to the Saginaw PS pump(well, along with the mounting bracket). All is just below the inj. pump

Thanks for the clarification, I was told it was gear driven via the timing chain...

Ive seen a powersteering pump replaced. Helped actually. Costed him a little over 100 bucks. Dont recall replacing the vacuum pump. Do recall that the vacuum is driven off of the steering.
