I just bought a 77 s/b 300-6 auto. The fuel gauge and the temp guage don"t work. The cluster I want to put in has gauges for the alt and temp. The one in it now has lights. Can I swap the 2 or do I have to change sending units as well
Well that bites. Can I just swap the fuel and temp gauges from one to the other.I"m having nothing but problem getting this truck figuired out.Like a 13j rear axle is not listed for a 77 F100 2x4

The fuel and temp gages will swap. Many times gauge problems can be traced to the instrument panel voltage regulator. There are many threads here on that subject. Usually the ground for the regulator goes bad and a simple cleaning of the flex circuit and mounting tab will fix it.
I went out and cleaned all the contact points, replaced the relay and I still have no gauges.I know I can get after market temp gauge but what about a fuel gauge. And is there any other fuses that I should be looking for. Thanks
I replaced the relay on the back of the I/P with a new one.I cant find any breaks on the printed curcuit but i guess it could be broken where I can"t see it
Use your voltmeter to check for voltage at the instrument panel voltage regulator. One terminal should be battery voltage. The other terminal should have a pulsating ON/OFF voltage that is fed to the gages. The gages then ground thru a variable resistor in the sender units. If the gages are OK etc a momentary ground of the wire at the sender unit should produce a full high reading. Do not hold that connection or it will burn out the gauge.
Finnally got it done. Two wires were not connecting now I have all my dash lights and fuel gauge the temp gauge still don"t work. But this is a problem else where.Where do you find the sending unit on the 300-6 for the temp.I think this is my last problem with this I/P.Thanks for all the help.
Perfect I found that sender it was oil soaked and loose cleaned it up and gave it a bit of a crimp. Now that works as well. This site is better than any shop. With out this site my trucks would be costing me a lot more$$$$$$$$.Once again thanks for all the info this site has to offer.
