97 Explorer wiring
My Haynes for f150's has the pushbutton 4wd in it, but I don't know if it's the same as your explorer. Also have a co-worker that has a Ford ranger with the pushbutton 4x4, and he ended up buying a diagram from helm.
This is what little I know. You have the pushbutton control panel, and brain box mounted somewhere that controls the whole system. Your motor that is mounted to the transfer case has a large plastic part that has a position switch. This position switch tells the brain box where the motor is positioned. A lot of the time, something happens to the motor and it's brushes, an it just quits. Some people have been able to take them apart to fix them. Unfortunately the co-workers system kept blowing fuses. He found road splash had corroded a connector on the inner fender in the engine compartment, and that was blowing the fuses to the system. By the way, you may want to check all your fuses too. Even though you are getting lights, I think there are several fuses to this system.
