I realize this is a subject everybody will not agree on....whether using an engine flush when changing the oil, is a good idea.
Personally, I like the idea. Here's some scientific evidence, not heresay:
The pan I use to drain oil into had some grime in it when I started. I flushed the engine, drained it into that pan, poured it into a gallon jug, the pan came out super clean.
I agree with using it too. I hear horror stories and such but I know what the inside of my engines look like so I'm not worried about a chunk of crud plugging the pickup tube. I use the KW 5 minute flush (diesel fuel) twice a year and run mobil1 which is changed twice a year with a new filter and a fresh quart of M1 between services, never had a problem.
Now if you were to buy a truck that the previous owner used parafin(penzoil) or asphalt based oils (quaker) in for 120K then I would be a little on the worried side.
Well, I've got two vehicles with 170K, change the oil every 5K (along with the 5 min flush) using Walmarts Super-tech hydrocarbon oil. Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'!
I prefer to do an oil change tune-up. Change oil/filter, leave oil 1 liter(quart) shy and top off with ATF. ATF is high in detergents, and cleans well, as well as having actual lubricating properties. Then take the vehical for a decent 20-30 minute drive at highway speed, change oil and filter again. I use cheap oil(Walmart 99cent crap is fine for this) for the inital blast with the ATF, and then change over to good quality oil. My own preference is the Castrol semi-synthetic for my truck, I to avoid Penzoil and QS.
The best cleaner I have ever used is KREEN. It is made by KANOLABS, and can be bought on-line go to KANOLABS.COM. It is $25 a gallon and can be used in both engine and gas. I first heard of Kano Labs in the 1960s they make KROIL and growing up in a town with a Naval Base Kroil was used by the Dept. of Navy to free rusted bolts etc. I use their products alot. What I did with my F250 460 was add about a half a quart of KREEN to the oil and drove it a few hours around town keeping my foot out of it, then drained the oil, changed the filter, I couldn't believe the crud, the oil stayed cleaner looking much longer. In fact I plan on doing it again it has been two years since doing it. A friend of mine owns a printing shop and he also owns about ten trucks with Cummins engines, and he has cases of their products that he uses not only in his trucks but in his printing presses. TRY IT YOU'LL LIKE IT I DO.
Yea using ATF works too but it doesent seem to break down the buildup you get when you use dino juice. The only thing I dont like about ATF is the fact it has friction modifiers in it as well but nothing harmfull in small amounts.
