Hey everyone, I have a 87 Pontiac Fiero that I'm fixing up right now. Anyways I was hoping someone might know if there is a Ford FWD V8 engine tranny combination. I want to put a V8 in the fiero but I want to use a ford engine and tranny if possible, just my experience that they're usually built tougher than gm's.
That is a good question and I had to think about it for a minute. What I thought of is a V8 out of 97 or 98 Taurus sho but that motor will be hard to find and they are built like crap. The best thing I thought of is a V8 out of a Lincoln Continental Between 1990 and the new ones are FWD. I seen alot of people who do the V8 swap on a Fiero they use a 4.5 or 4.9 Cadillac motor.
i didnt even know they made front wheel drive fieros? a couple of my freinds have had them and all the ones ive worked on had rear engines with rear wheel drive. am i missing somithing here?
What you need is a transaxle, since they were most commonly used in FWD cars, that's the best source of them, especially since the engine is generally transverse mounted. What comes to mind, but probably wouldn't work even if you could find one, is the ZF tranaxle as used in the Pantera. They used a 351C, so a 302/5.0 will bolt up no problem, but they weren't tranverse-mounted so you would almost certainly run into space limitations. Intriguing idea though, I'll have to give this one some thought! -TD
The only problem with the V8 SHO engine is the cam sprockets. Weld those and you have no problems. I would recommend the V6 SHO engine over the V8 simply because of price. That way you could use the MTX-V for a 5spd. And the V6 is much cheaper to buy, hell I have two in the garage. Want one? lol. I know its not a V8 but the only thing you'll miss is the low-end torque. I would imagine the V6 SHO engine stuffed into a Fiero would be a lot of fun.
Ah I'm used to car fires, almost every vehicle I've owned has been 20yrs old or so. My opinion when things are that old is allways stash a fire extinguisher beneth the seat. Should have seen the chevy van that went up in smoke on me, that's what tought me that lesson. Hmmm it's only been the chevy's that have done that yup that's why I'm going to be different and stuff a ford engine into the beast.
Actually come to think of it a v6 SHO doesn't sound like a bad idea, What automatic transmission would I have to bolt it to? I want to keep it auto so my fiancee can drive it on occasion. Anyways SuperHighOutput if you are actually intereasted in selling one of your v6's give me an email.

A few years back, the SHO drivetrain was installed in the rear of a Ford Festiva, creating a vehicle known as the "SHOGUN"...Jay Leno has one in his vast collection. There were only a handful built, but from everying I've read about them - they were pretty awesome cars!
Well if you want an auto attatched to the V6 SHO you will want the 3.2 that came in 93-95 ATX SHOs. As far as the tranny you will want one out of a 94 or 95 since Ford upgraded some of the internals from the 93 year. I believe it is an AXOD, I can double check that later. www.shoforum.com and www.shotimes.com are good source of info regarding SHOs. A guy on shoforum.com has a Topaz he swapped a SHO motor into. I believe he is currently making it all-wheel drive using 2 SHO motors. He would be an excellent source of info if you go this route. I'll send you an e-mail later regarding the motors I have or the whole parts car.
