I have a 1986 F-150 5.8 liter 4x4. I have just replaced the water pump because it was leaking, but a lot of rust water came out. I am about to flush the whole system but am wondering how much damage has already been done. Everything is still oringial on it, nothing else has been replaced. My big question is, when I took out the bolts on the water pump they were in pretty bad shape, so what about everyting else? Does this mean that everything else is about to go out on me because everything else is just as worn? There are 80,000 miles on it, but I don't know if this is original or if it has rolled over a couple of times? I have been thinking about just replaceing the entire engine and everything else. Is that what I am going to have to do? Any ideas on what the best thing to replace with on how to save what I have?
Don't be so tragic. It's not uncommon for water pump bolts that sit in water passages to rust like that. Remember all those hot/cold cycles speed rusting up. I wouldn't do anything out of the ordinary in the way of preventive maintainance.
But this is good- Flush the cooling system out like crazy. Then unscrew the 2 plugs from the bottom of the block and run hose water through it for a while. After this, make sure you use anitfreeze so the rust doesn't get like it was.
And don't forget to clean the **** out of the overflow bottle/tank, it sucks when you forget to do that and all the sludge gets back in your virgin clean cooling system.
thanks for the tip. Took it to a shop and the leaks where coming off the casing that was connected to the block. the pump was on top of that casing and that is why it looked like the pump was leaking. The timing chain was loose too. Thanks anyways. Got to LOVE those FORDs...I DO!
