HI I have a 78. It had a bad hub. If you have one bad hub you will not get the tires to spin. If you can get it off the ground you can check to see if the drive train is turning. or put it in gear and jack one front tire at a time to see if the hubs are locked up. Hope this helps. Erv

with the hubs locked in shift it back into two wheel drive, then with the truck NOT running , reach inside the steering knuckle inside the front wheels and see if you can rotate the axle, it should be locked in place, if it spins then that hub should be checked on that side.....that is the easy thing to check. but it could be broken gears, broken axle (inner or outer) hopefully just a dirty or even an over greased hub....good luck

If it has the stock ford locking hubs on it save yourself some aggravation and buy a set of the warn hubs. I used to have to rebuild my ford hubs every summer. you'd lock the hub but because of the backwards design they suffered from you'd get no four wheel drive. I had to open the hubs out on the beach a couple of times to "manually engage" them... Enjoy the truck, Ford did a much better job with the rest of it, I just never liked those hubs
