Gauges are goofy

The gas, temp, oil and alt gauge sometimes don't work, but turning the key off and back on or sometimes a light rap on the dash gets them working again.

Isn't there some kind of special regulator in the dash to control the gauges? Does this go bad? Do I need to pull the entire dash out to fix this?

Thanks for any info as I'm not sure on this one.
Keith

Check and recheck the all the connections on the back of the instrument panel and any where else that you can get at. The constant voltage regulator may also be bad. It is a small rectangular box on the back of the panel. Try swapping another one to see if the gauges work better.

Sounds like a bad ground to me. As said before, check all the connections.

What ground would I check? What should I look for?

It appears to be a printed circuit board with only a single bundle of wires plugged in. The dash lights and turn indicators do not have a problem, only the guages.

Thanks,
Keith
