After reading thru quite a few threads, I'm not satisfied to take action just yet. So here's what I've got.
1990 EB Bronco 160k miles on it. There is a 6inch suspension lift but it was on before I bought it. I ran the truck with no noise for months before this, now a new noise is getting worse. When driving street to freeway speeds (35-65mph) I let off the gas and hear a loose, grating noise underneath me. When I accelerate, the noise disappears. However, I going in reverse on an incline the rear starts shaking horribly and goes nowhere.
There does not seem to be any play in the front or rear driveshaft. I will grease the shaft today, but the grating noise while coasting off throttle is what really has me nervous about driving it. Anyone out there experience this sound or problem?
Check the pinion bearings. Make sure the shaft is not loaded, so you can turn the shaft back and forth a little. (put in neutral and lock e-brake) Then see if there is any up and down or in and out play in the pinion bearings. Any play at all and they are almost certainly the culprit. Noise on decel is very common complaint with bad pinion bearings.

That may be the best news I've heard all day! I ordered some new 4.88 gears from Bronco Graveyard and the Sales Rep had me add the Overhaul Kit which includes the bearings you speak of. I hope that fixes this issue when they are installed. Will let you know what happens.
Problem solved - when changing tires yesterday. I believe they are called the u-bolts (the screws that hold the lift block from the axle to leaf springs) were ALL loose. I could wiggle them in each direction!!!
So I tightened all the screws for both sides and now that griding noise has gone away and there is no more "thud" either when hitting a bump. I am still getting my bearings installed when I get my new gearing done this week. Thanks again for your help.
