Pre-Road Trip Preparation?

My brothers and I are thinking of loading up my 01 Expedition EB (5.4, 4x4) and heading out to Colorado (from the Chicago area) in a few weeks. Just curious what sort of pre-trip preparation most of you do. Check the fluids, kick the tires, etc. My battery is the original, but it has been religiously maintained, and seems to be fine. Truck has 55K on it, with the original tires(Wrangler RT/S), and while they suck, they've got an incredible amount of tread still on them. I'll pack the tire chains, just in case. Planning on bringing some spare fluids, chain, jumper cables, folding shovel, code reader, and that kind of stuff, but what other spares would you consider bringing? It's an 01, so I'm not too worried about plug blow-out. As far as IAC and related valves, they're original, and it's getting up to that time, but I've cleaned the IAC (about 10K ago), and the truck shows NO bad symptoms. Anyone have any good suggestions?

Thumbs up

It sounds like you have a pretty good idea of how to prepare yourself for this trip already. I question that you wouldn't want to replace tires with 55k on them to travel into the mountains; however. I took a trip to CO with less than good tires on my vehicle a few years back and was very fortunate not to end up down the mountain when I spun out on snow in a heavy snow storm. I would definitely recommend you put some new tires on your truck. Hope you have a great trip, I love to visit CO.

Yeah, I've reconsidered that as well.

It really is amazing how much tread is left on the stock Wrangler RT/S...there's between 8-10/32 on the tires, which makes it hard for me to think about replacing them...but on the other hand, they're such terrible snow tires that I'm springing for a set of Revos, I think...if I can find them for a decent price (see my other active thread).

Any other suggestions?

While the Wrangler RT/S tire is not the best snow tire they do an adequate job especially, if you have 4-wheel drive. I'd say that if you have as much tread on your tires as you say you do - keep the Wranglers and use the tire money for an emergency on your trip should something happen.

I have a 2002 F-150 Super Cab 5.4L 4x4 with the FX4 package and Wrangler RT/S tires with 58,700 miles on it and I drive in a lot of snow during the winter with no problems. The tires are the ones that came on the truck but they still have another fifteen to twenty thousand miles left on them. When I do replace them, I'll probably replace them with B. F. Goodrich All Terrain T/A's.

Enjoy your trip and don't worry about the tires.
