How old is your atf? If quite a few miles, try changing it first.
it has about 25000 miles, due for a change .the trans done it the first time with 36000 on truck. i have run mobil 1 atf since then.changed at 60,85,110. it seems to start the shutter close to fluid change . do you think messing with any of the chips is worth it .
Yes, I would change it, if no obvious problems with tranny, put a Transgo shift kit in it. I put one in my 250 & very satisfied. Different levels of "firmness" supplied with the kit. It was easy to install also. Good time to do it when the pan is off. It will firm up your shifts! Check with Motorhaven on this site, they may have a kit.

Reason: update
You could also try the AODE transmission shutter fix from Auto Trans. Its a little circuit board that you mount inside the bottom of your transmission. It splices into a couple wires that run to a solenoid. It is specifically designed to aleviate this common problem with the 4R70W. I have one one my truck. I installed it about 4-5 years ago. I think it works great. The truck has shifted better ever since. It firms up the shifts. I think it costs about 75 bucks. I'm not sure where you can get one. I got mine from a local guy who rebuilds transmissions. You might be able to purchase one off of their website. The cool think is you can install one of these while your servicing your tranny.
