While driving, my engine started running real rough. I pulled over and it back fired several times through the carb, and died. Is it possible the timing chain jumped? My sticker wore off, does anyone know what the timing is for a 80 Bronco, 351? I thought I heard a low rumble sound, almost like someone's boom box when the engine first acted up. My dad turned the distributer slightly and we got it running again, but it won't run at idle, and is still a little rough. Just replaced, plugs, wires, cap and rotor a few weeks back.....

The correct timing, according to Chiltons is 8 degrees BTDC. As for ideas, maybe think about air mixture, is your idle speed (650-800rpm) correct, are your plugs too cold (meaning the # designated on ur plugs), and have ur removed ur carb and cleaned it recently? Just some ideas.
Does the motor spin very quickly now when you try to start it, much quicker than it used to? If it does, it's almost assuredly the timing chain. The motor spins quicker because there is no compression when you try to start it, due to the incorrect timing. You can generally get the motor to start in this situation if you crank it enough, but it won't stay running. If this is the case, do not keep trying to start it as it is possible to damage other internal engine parts.
It doesn't spin any faster, and we have got it running. When the choke is on, and the rpm's are up, it runs okay, but seems to miss like one cyclinder. When the choke is off, the low rpm's cause the engine to stall.
