The speedometer on my '92 XLT has suddenly lost its mind. At around 40-45mph, it suddenly shoots up past 85, where it stays as long as the car is moving. Sometimes it will oscillate back and forth between totally pegged and 60mph, but it mostly just stays all the way clockwise. Is this an electrical or mechanical problem? Thanks!

I had similar probem in my 97 Eddie Bauer. Some days, speedo would work fine, other days, it would show "0" when I'm going 60 MPH on highway. Guy at local service station replaced $100 circuit board right behind speedo and now it works fine again. Kevin
On the 92 there is a mechanical Velocity Speed Sensor. You can pick one up at most parts stores for $20.00-30.00. Easy to remove/install, 10 min job. Hayes manual should help you do it.
