Timing alignment

Timing alignment
I have a 97 explorer 4.0L. The jack chain tenisioner broke. I am going to reolace it and the chain and sprockets. Besides getting no.1 piston to TDC, do I need to align the camshaft sprockets?

I may be way off base here but the last time I changed a timing chain, cam, and gears (many moons ago) there was a punch mark on both the cam sprocket and the chain sprocket. You had to align them one atop the other.

Yes you need to line everything up. You need to check and make sure how the marks line up on your truck. some of them line up in the middle (facing each other) and some line up where both are on top. Once they are lined up and the distributor and #1 cylinder are lined up you are ready to go.

I finally got the valve covers off. I then brought the no.1 piston to TDC. Looking at the right bank, the slots on the end of the camshaft are about 7:00 posistion, on the left bank the slots are almost straight up and down. A mechanic at the ford dealership said to have the slots parallel to the head and on top. How do I know if they need to be lined up in the middle are parallel? Also, on the left bank near the firewall, the chain doesn't seem to be riding in the tensioner. Pull engine and fix with new tensioner?
