Just had our first real snow with slick roads and idiot drivers My truck is a 04 F-350 6.0 auto with manual hubs and manual shifter. What I noticed was a slight growling noise with a slight vibration with 4X4 engaged. The hubs have been in lock position for a while (1 week) so I will guess the problem lies in the transfer case. The problem was noticable at all speeds but was worse at higher speeds (up to 60 mph). I was just wondering if anyone has had this same thing happen. BTW-the roads were snow packed and icy, I was not using 4X4 on dry roads.
Have you driven this truck in 4wd before now? What you are hearing is the transfer case doing it's job. Since most of us rarely us the 4x the new sounds tend to make us thin it is a problem. The transfer case, front axle and front driveshaft are now turning and making different vibrations and sounds then during 2wd operation.
My 03 F250 does the same thing... at first I thought something was screwed up. Can someone explain the locking hubs thing to me? If the hubs are locked, does that put it into 4X4 mode? I have the Elec. Shift-On-The-Fly dial. Does low 4x4 only work w/ the hubs locked? (I feel really stupid not knowing this *****.)
With ESOF, the basic strategy is to leave the hubs in "Auto" - then the drivetrain is in whatever mode you tell it to be with the dash dial. However, *if* the auto hubs were to break for some reason, then you could spin them to "lock" as a backup plan to be able to get 4x4 going.
There's more to it than that, discussed endlessly in threads here every couple of days, but that's the quick overview.

No, I haven't driven the truck in 4X4 untill now, but like I said in my post, the hubs have been in the lock position for over a week. With the hubs locked, both axle shafts and the front driveline are turning all the time and there is no noise or vibration. I only get the noise when the T-case is in 4 HI so I would suspect that is where my problem is. I don't have any noise/vibration issues with my 03 F-550 so this is why I am concerned with my 04, I do not think this is normal.
After using 4x4 for a couple of days now, the transfer case seems quieter. I think everything just needed some good use to get broke in or settled in-whichever the case may be. Thanks for the input.
