Timing Is Off?

Hey Fellas,
I just bought a 1989 4x4 Ford F-150 5.0L 302 5 speed manual and I failed my smog test for CA. I was told the air injection, catalytic convertors and timing were the issues. Does anybody have information on what might have failed the air injection and the timing if the gun read 8 points retard? Supposedly this would make the truck gutless since it is 18 points off what it's supposed to be at... However... It doesn't seem to be. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

U probably need new cats/muffler and tune up, & possibly the distributor. Also look into the PCV and hose. Clean the smog control up some. I'm thinking in print.

Welcome to FTE. I hate to answer a new member like this on this issue, but:

The seller is supposed to smog the vehicle before selling. Per state law.

Take it back and get your money back. The cost of new cats and whatever else it needs is probably more than you paid for it. Sorry.

If for some reason you can't get your money back and can't sue the guy:

--did you get a printout from the smoggy?

--note Magnaflow shows CA approved replacement cats for your truck. It uses 2.

Not sure on Nevada law, but I doubt it requires a smog. What does the print out read? CO, CO2 NOX, HC etc. The standard and what your truck blew.

A couple possible causes for the timing issue; The distributor at some point was removed and re-installed incorrectly, or depending on the mileage, the timing set is stretched/worn.

In addition to the other questions regarding the smog test results, where is is currently registered? Did you buy it private party? Is it a 49 state vehicle or a CA vehicle?

If it's a CA vehicle, there should have been a smog history on it. If the air injection is missing, it was probably removed by the PO. Unless it just rusted off....in which case you'd have other issues....

Anyway, let us know. The smog numbers can tell the tale on the cats and which way to go.
