Unhappy Block Heater

I've just found my Block Heater plug on my "03" SD F350 Dually, they don't make them easy to find, they affraid someone might take it? The question is how do you know if the Block Heater is working? I've gone through the owners manual and everything but nothing says to look for a idiot light or anything that will indicate it's on, or working. Any ideas? Thanks.

You could put an ohm meter on it. Got 17 ohms on mine. If meter doesn't move it's open. Measure between the two flat plugs. If it was grounded it would blow your breaker. Also on a quiet night plug it in and keep ear next to grill. You'll hear the "crackle" of the water heating.

If your truck starts really easily on a cold morning after using the block heater, then it was working....

When the truck has been cold. Leave the heater plugged in for at least four hours. (Over night is a waste of power) When you get in the truck leave the door open or turn on the dome light. Before you turn the key, note the position of the engine temperature needle. Turn the key on, and notice the needle rise. Also, without using the heater, you'll note that it takes about 7-12 seconds for the glow plug indicator to extinguish if your ambient temps are below say 40 degrees. If you use the heater, once the key is turned then the time before the glow plug indicator goes out is reduced to about 2 seconds. There isn't an indicator for the block heater. Just cause and effect.

It's working (Heater Plug)

Thanks for all the replys. When I went out this morning I unpluged the cord, got in the truck and started it with no problem. I can tell it was working because the Truck did not have to rev high at all in order to heat up. Thanks again for the info.

Block heater check out

After a 4 hour plug in time for the block heater, I opened the hood and removed the cap from the coolant overflow tank. Coolant temp was over 100 F. Check it out! 9 amps X 110 volts = 990 watts; a good amount of electricity for 4 hours but worth it for the easy start and quick heat.........Mike
