im thinking of investing in a set of tow hooks because as of now i dont really have anywhere to connect a tow strap or anthing to save my ***. can i just hook them on to my bumper's or where is a good mounting spot. my front bumper is stock but ive got a different rear bumper on my truck
on the 3/4 ton i used to have i mounted them sideways on the bottom edges of the sides of the receiver hitch. you want to pick something solid like the frame or receiver or grille guard. you could pull the bolts right through the bumper under the right conditions and then have you ever got a deadly projectile. if you have front and rear receivers you might want to think about a drawbar with a clevis, seen it as part of a winch accesory kit or you could make your own.
ok, ive got the hitch in the back so thats all set. then up front, ive got these two bars. one of the previous owners said that they used to tow the truck behind an rv. so the two bars were used to hook it up to the rv. would these be strong enough? i would think so but im not real sure
they might be, as long as they are mounted to the frame with at least grade 8 hardware you should be o.k. remember, if you're pulling (or being pulled) out of the mud (or snow) you have the vehicle weight plus the resistance of whatever you're stuck in. (like when your boot gets sunk in the mud and it's real hard to pull it out). better to be safe than to be a statistic! Dave.
I used chevy tow hooks because they mount on the bottom of the frame so they are under the bumper. This way a strap or chain won't dent the bumper when you pull. Now, I have a front hitch and clevis. This way it pulls from both framerails. Here is a pic of the chevy tow hooks on the frame. https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...=25269&width=2
You can get them at any junkyard for cheap (lots of chevys )
You can always eBay up some factory hooks... I'll trust them over almost anything else, even a receiver as they aren't rated for that stress, and say it right there in the manual/box/safety stamp.
Ryan50hrl - I know what you mean with tow hooks off a dump truck, I recently got 4 of them out of a junkyard and they are huge must weight like 10 lbs each, they were off a 50's era ford dump truck
The superduties have some real nice hooks. I put two on the front of the Bronco alongside the frame. I need to cut slots in the bumper for them to poke through this weekend.
The catalog for pintle hooks (what I like to run for straps and such, even though I have tow hooks) is about 4 MB and gives all the dimensions for their excellent stuff.
