When the temperature gets cold sometimes I'm unable to start my diesel 2002 Excursion. I turn the key, all the dashboard lights go on normally, but the motor doesn't crank. All I hear is a click. Batteries are good. Once is while I'm able to start it by turning the key on and off really quick and then it grabs. Unfortunately, most of the time it doesn't work. I'm able to get is started next day when it gets warmer outside. My mechanic thinks that it may be the starter but he didn't inspect the truck yet. Please help me.
Check your battery cables both at each end. Can you get any movement? If so unhook, clean to bare metal, reconnect apply an anti-corrosive jel and tighten. Check for good ground connection. The click is the starter relay doing its job. You can locate the relay and have someone else cycle the key just to verify. You can also jumper out the relay to check the starter.
Thanks for the reply. I have to correct myself. I thought I was getting a click but actually nothing happens. I will try to clean those terminals anyway.
It is your starter I had the exact same problem with my f-250 it took me a while to find out what it was. if you take off your starter and and spin the conection if it spins easily then it is the starter.
