When will the 2002's be available?

When will the 2002 Escapes be available? My wife would really like to wait for the 2002 Escapes to come out, but I can't get a straight answer from any Ford salesman I've talked to. The vague answers ranged from "Soon" to "Two to three months".

After driving all of the other small SUV's and a few wagons, we think the Escape will suit us the best.

Thanks,
Jeff

I would advise getting a leftover late 2001 if you can. Historically with Ford, they start decontenting and cost-cutting right away, so each successive model year has less and less stuff. My Mystique is a classic example. From the time the car was introduced in '95 until my '99, I catalogued over a dozen features/items that were eliminated or cheapened. If you get a late build, chances are you'll miss most of the early build issues. Plus you'll get a better deal if you can find one you are happy with.

While this may be true in some cases, I'm more worried about the little fixes that they sneak into the later model years to correct problems that are released as TSB's, but not a recall. There is quite a list of TSB's for the 2001 model year Escapes.

By the way, the 2002's started arriving in Cincinnati last week (despite some salesman acting like I was smoking crack when I called them last week, saying things like "Those won't be out until December or January!"). It looks like the "one" we want rolled off the truck this morning. We'll be taking a look at it today. It's a yellow XLS that's pretty much fully loaded with V6, auto, 4x4, towing package, etc.

Unfortunately, my wife will get the Escape and I'll have to drive the aging 95 Aerostar to work.

You make a good point, which is why I specified a late model year build (June). Most of the early issues were fixed by then; although there are two fairly minor June TSBs involving hardware changes. You can simply state you want all the applicable TSBs performed before you take delivery.

I guess it comes down to a balance between avoiding early issues because it's a new model and avoiding later issues due to the cheapening of parts that used to be fine. Buying the second year in is usually a good compromise, but even then stuff has already started to change, although Ford is usually better with their trucks than with their cars.

If your dealer said that, he IS lost. Especially when there are few changes, the next model year is usually arriving by early September, as you saw.

Almost bought the wife an Escape. 2001 model loaded pretty well. Dealer was asking invoice on all 2001's. The problem was, and they wouldn't budge, they added an alarm system $550 and some dent and scotch guard crap $1190 to the vehicle. He would remove the alarm but that's it. I did check the build date and it was 7/01

Dealers use these add-ons to boost their profit margin. Certainly an alarm and the protection package aren't worth $1200!

I got the "Value Guard" package (paint coating, scotch guard, and undercoat) for $400, and I'm sure the dealer still made some money on that one add-on. I did not, however, spring for the extended warranty (another add-on that dealers profit from).

Luckily, I'm on the X-plan, so I didn't have to argue about the price. My recent experience was good, but like everyone else, I've got my own salesman, dealer, service department, and mechanic horror stories.
