Laptop interface for EEV-IV

I have a 1990 F250 with EEC-IV (Electronic Engine Control IV) and I also have a laptop. Could someone explain what other equipment I need to purchase to check codes on it? I inderstand I need a cable and software.

I also realize I can purchase a scanner, such as AutoXray but does it offer any advantages over a laptop?

The primary advantage of a handheld unit is you don't have to lug a laptop around!

Well, I already lug a laptop around, so it won't make any difference.

I want something where I can connect the laptop to the interface and see charts of how everything is doing. What kind of cable do I get and software?

That's not chip and tuning... that's code reading. This forum section is pretty much centered around computer chips and tuners (hence the title).

1990?

I think you need to be in the 96 era for the laptop Idea, when OBDII was introduced. Just my opinion

Apropos...check out this link from the "Garage and Workshop" forum...it mentions several sources for what you're looking for:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...gnostic+tools+

I'm in the market for something similar, except my '04 uses CANbus and can't be read by the current cheapo scanners.

Good luck!

Most EEC-IV computers (pre-'96) are incapable of outputting anything more than codes. Sometime in the '90's ('93 seems to commonly be the first year, but can't speak for every case) where the EEC-IV computers got the ability to output sensor data to scanner through the self-test connector. I would be a little surprised if your '90 could.
If all you need is trouble codes, grab a paper clip and a $5 analog voltmeter, read the instructions at www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html, find the self-test connector, and read the codes. If you need to interface with individual sensors, then you need a breakout box ($$$), or take the risk of backprobing.
