I have a 1990 F250 with EEC-IV (Electronic Engine Control IV) and I also have a laptop. Could someone explain what other equipment I need to purchase to check codes on it? I inderstand I need a cable and software.
I also realize I can purchase a scanner, such as AutoXray but does it offer any advantages over a laptop?
Most EEC-IV computers (pre-'96) are incapable of outputting anything more than codes. Sometime in the '90's ('93 seems to commonly be the first year, but can't speak for every case) where the EEC-IV computers got the ability to output sensor data to scanner through the self-test connector. I would be a little surprised if your '90 could.
If all you need is trouble codes, grab a paper clip and a $5 analog voltmeter, read the instructions at www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html, find the self-test connector, and read the codes. If you need to interface with individual sensors, then you need a breakout box ($$$), or take the risk of backprobing.
