Broken leaf spring mount!

Hi all, I'm a newbie around here, Anyway, I have a '93 f150 xl with the 300. Well, I was putting on a new exhaust the other day an noticed that the rear mounr for the left rear leaf spring is cracked. Dos any one know if this is aomething that a delaer would have. I t looks like it's Riveted ti the frame, So I'm assuming I'll have to drill those rivets, replace the mount, then use grade 8 bolts or something to attach the new one. I may go to a junk yard and look, but what a PITA it would be to try to remove from a frame.

Yes you can get those hangers at the dealership. They run about 35-40 dollars each. You will need to remove the rivets and replace them with bolts. I beleive that the bolts are readily available. I am not sure if you have to use grade 8 or grade 9 bolts. Most tire or suspension shops can also replace the rivets with bolts for you if you don't have the tools.

No problem, I had both rear hangers replaced on the drivers side last spring. I have heard that it is quite common.
Good Luck

Now theres a job i havent done in a month or two. shackle brackets are a dealer item only. the hardest part is removing the spring mounting bolt from the shackle, lots of lube and twist it out with an impact gun. take a 4 1/2'' angle grinder and grind the head off the rivets and i believe 3/8''x1 1/2'' coarse grade 8 bolts are the ticket. use lock nuts rather than lock washers but not the nylon ones, the ones that have a sorta oval hole and regular flat washers work best. watch your eyes you only get two

I would recomend buying the parts at the dealership, I looked into getting them from a junkyard. They wanted $50 for the part and then they would need to remove it. For the removal they wanted to charge between $20-$40 for it. Plus for $40 you know it is new and not going to crack soon.

Welcome to FTE. Do a Advance Search above for shackles. I did a search on FTE for shackles, removing rivets.

Dealer only item, you may have to melt out the leaf spring bushing to get the bolt out. Also check the front shackles to. Mine were both rusted out. While your there look for hairline cracked leaf springs between the u bolts.

I agree with the hairline crack check. CLEAN off any surface you can using brake clean because it doesnt leave a residue then spray spot checker on it and wipe it off. it will show a crack. you can get this from any welders supply outlet. a full and varyied life sure does find ways of using products not ment for an application and finding a use afterall for it. but thats from my boilermaker welding past ha ha .

Sounds like my problem

I think I'm having the same problem with my '95 4x4 XL. My mechanic has not done a repair like this one, and I fear what it is going to cost. I saw the post on the cost of the new mounts and bolts, but does anyone have an idea what the hours/labor cost on this would be? Sounds like myguy was right when he said that it would be "labor intensive".

I know Ford has a book for how much labor everthing takes, you can call them. Getting those rivets out takes a while. I had my front shackels replaced lst year but i dont remember how long it took, sorry.
