What generally takes place when you take your truck to a mechanic for a tune up?

Plugs, wires (if you have them), air filter, distributor cap/rotor (if equipped)

Add: timing if it is adjustable, and carb adjust if it has one, and maybe a fuel filter.

Sometimes when you take your truck to a mechanic for a tune up - not much happens.
Depends where you go. That is why you should try it yourself.

And sometimes you may want to get a second opinion!

On an NEWER vehicle a complete tune up would include the followin:
new MOTORCRAFT spark plugs
new MOTORCRAFT wires
new O2 sensors
air, fuel and breather filters
new PCV valve
oil change
new MOTORCRAFT (or NAPA) cap and rotor
a complete fuel injector cleaning.

Make sure you SPEND money on the ignition parts, its better to pay the extra now instead of paying it later when you have to be towed.

I would only replace the O2, cap, rotor and wires if needed.
When I do a tune up I also like to clean the throttle body, IAC and battery terminals.

Anything could happen. A mech that needs the work might find 10 things wrong, a busy guy could miss something. The best way to keep your truck running smooth is to learn how to maintain it yourself. Stick to the maintenance schedule, try to do as much as you can and let a real pro look at it once in a while.

A 92 5.0.is a Good truck, if it is running OK why bother? Any particular problems?
My 92 f150 4.9L made it 150,000 miles on the original wires and cap. changed the plugs twice, and no major sensors have gone bad and I have 162,000 miles now, My engine wore out but that is something else.
You can visit the forums about 92 trucks or 5.0's and read alot of info or post more specific question there. Everything you need to know is here, but it is spread around in each specific forum.
