It you happen to settle on a '97-'99 with the 5.4, get the VIN and have a Ford dealer run the OASIS report to see what is in the computer for repairs. My '99 had the infamous head gasket oil leak--it was fixed once, recurred and the engine was replaced. Outside of that, I loved it--now driving an '03. I also had a '97 and a '99 F150 with the 4.6--both went over 150,000 miles with only plugs and oil changes.
I bought a 99 a few months ago that is mint and is smooth and sounds great.
Does the OASIS system go back the whole time period? I thought I read it only covered one year?
hmmm. We rented a '98 Expy back then and drove it from Florida to Oregon after vacationing in the Orlando area. I'd say we had it for a total of 5 weeks and about 4500 miles. It was a 5.4 XLT 4WD with 3 seats and no tow Pkg, and had just a few thousand miles on it when we picked it up. We drove through the Gulf Coast, went north thru Texas to Kansas, west to Colorado, North to Wyoming, and then homeward bound over three mountain ranges. At the time, we owned a '98 Suburban, so that was our reference point.
1) 3rd seat comfort was abyssmal. The kids and wife fought the whole trip over who had to get stuck back there.
2) Gutless. I got passed, going uphill, by a number of semis west of Cheyenne. I imagine it was under-geared, but it didn't like long steep hills at all. Can't imagine towing anything with it. Wife kept saying "I'm sure it has a small engine since it's a rental." I kept saying, "hon, the 5.4 is the big engine."
3) Incredibly sensitive to crosswinds. Was actually hard to hold a lane driving through the perpetual wind in Kansas. You dreaded getting close to semis. Somewhere north of OKC wife refused to drive it anymore. It was a looong drive home.
The upside? Really nice truck to drive in town. Genuinely felt like that was what the truck was designed to do.
Long story short- I understand they improved the 1st generation over the years, and we own a '03 Expy today. Wouldn't have taken that '98 on a bet though- the 'Burb was a far superior rig. Not true anymore.
