Guy has a truck to sell for 2100. says hell give it to me for 1900 if i'm interested.
127,000 miles
Tranny has been replaced recently.
302
long bed
what i'd like to know
4 spd overdrive auto
What transmission is this? any good?
Did the 92 f150's come with posi rear end? he says it has one.
Any quirks to know about for the 92 302? He says it uses up a lil oil.
That dosn't concern me to much, but could be a bad omen if i can't get the sale to finish my loan off if i baught it.
I have my motorcycle to sell, and i can use that to pay off the loan and rebuild the engine if it worked out right. Should be able to get 4-5k for the bike, even though its in pieces.
Being a contractor, he kinda tried to fast talk me a lil, but i'm a bit smarter to that, he wasn't trying to BS me to the ground, but was trying to get a fast sale. Says he needs the money, and has to many vehiclse to keep insurance on this one. Which could be true!
and, what could the oil loss be exactly?
I plan on test driveing the truck, going to go check for loan possibility first.
Any details on certian things to check for on 92's would be great also.
I'll go over the basics for fords.
Oh the other note is, after warenty up, hes always had same mechanic work on it, That seems good to me, but really is it?
I can always go question the guy on the work then again!!!
Please title threads accurately to their subject matter, in this case, "purchasing F-150" might be a good title. "92 F-150 info needed" is too general, please be more specific in the future. It helps future people who are using the search to find info.
It probably has the AOD, but without a VIN or trans code we don't know.'
Ford calls them "Traction-Lok" instead of posi, posi is just a GM/Chevy term for the same thing, they're Limited Slip Differentials. It's an option on pretty much all F-series of our generation, some have them and some don't.
I would be concerned about it burning oil, that is a sign of low compression which is a sign that the motor doesn't have much life left. I would definitely do a compression test on this motor to determine what kind of condition it's in. Hopefully it will be 150psi+ on all cylinders, and the #s should be close to eachother for each cyl. However, if it's burning a good amount of oil, it's probably not that great in the compression department, or there possibly could be a valve issue.
Also, check the oil pan for rust spots...a lot of people have had problems with the oil pan rusting out, and it's pretty expensive to replace. That also could be the oil problem...might be leaking the oil and not burning it. I've got a 92 302 with 115K on the clock that doesn't burn any oil at all...but it does leak a little from the oil pan.
If the end of the gearshift lever has a button to take off the overdrive, then it has the e40d transmission. Same things as most autos, if you maintain it, it will last.
According to my owners manual, there was a limited slip available in 92. Kind of wish mine had it
Oil loss could be any number of things from a leak in the valve covers or oil pan to the rings being shot. Does it seem to blow any smoke from the tailpipe? You could also do a compression test on the motor.

Reason: spelling
My 92 uses a little oil but it leaks it. I think it leaks from the rear main and the pushrod cover of my I6. The compression test will tell you if its bad cylinders or leaks. Mine has 140K miles and runs great.
4-speed over drive is the E4OD (Electronic/4-speed/Over/Drive) Same as on mine and works great.
I think using the same mechanic is great. I do most of my work myself but I use the same mechanic when its more than I want to bite off. I think you get a little more honest work by using the same guy over and over. My guy is very appreciative when I bring in a vehicle to him and treats me real good. And if you wanted the vehicle checked out I'd take it over to that mechanic and pay him the $50-100 for the purchase check. You couldn't do much better than that.
I own a 92 F-150 4x4 extended cab with 100,000 miles. If its burning oil you probably want to avoid it, but if its leaking oil its probably just a common problem. I have had to replace a rusty oil pan. Its not fun and can be costly depending on your mechanic. Also, these trucks are notorious for leaking out of the rear main seal. It is common for all 5.0's and is almost impossible to completely fix. It just seems like they are meant to leak. Mine doesn't even lose a quart between oil changes, so except for the spot on the driveway it doesn't really bother me too much. Overall I have been very happy with my truck.
The actual pan is about 100 bucks, but the labor to put it on is the tricky part. Ya gotta lift the motor up about 2" which requires some kind of hoist that most people don't have. Usually, if the leak is small, I'd use some silicone sealer as a temporary fix. I had a leaky pan and that fix lasted atleast a year and 1/2, it was totalled by a red light runner so I never got the chance to see it leak.
I'm thinking its a leak not burning oil. Wasn't used for towing or any rough work, Just a daily driver. Probably hauled lumber in the bed if that.
I plan on checking it throughly.
The reason topic is labed the way it is, is because i want info, i'm not secure in purchaseing.
I know the forum rules and have been in the fourm a year. I think i can title a thread. =)
I've mentioned it for a reason, I've seen titling faults in the past and have PMed about it. I understand the reason for you titling this thread in the way you did, my point is simply that it is still too general
imo it needs work. i paid $200. for a 94 with same mileage. needed oil pump screen. total into truck less than $450. with title transfer, tags and smog. drove it out of 3 feet of snow after sitting for a week with out a wimper. so, imo $1900. is way too much for a 92 that needs work.
if your paying 200 dollars for a truck it must have more rust then body.
For michigan, this truck dosnt' have much rust.
And as far as i can tell only an oil problem. which is probably just a leak. I doubt 302 is burning oil, but its a possibility.
my 91 KBBed at 6000, and i got it for 1800, sunk 1000 into anew clutch oil pan and ball joints, It didn't need the oil pan, but had it done while engine was up.
2800 for a perfect running truck. when its valued at 6000 with 140k miles.
You better think about the area you live in.
Junk yards dont count for buys there. 200 is a beater truck in any state.
You probably have more problems on that truck then you know about if you only payed 200.
A decent truck in my area is atleast 1500+ And i live in the motorcity capitol!
This vehicle is being purchased from a ford area, so the vehichle will also be cheeper, say if i purchased it here closer to where i live, which is GM town.
There are little areas that are dodge, ford, or chevy/gm. And you can tell by whats parked in driveways. Its like mini cults and people dont even know tehy are part of it.
