I have an 84 f250. It has a 351 with a 2 barrel on top. I dont know much about it so i was looking for some help. I think the auto choke sticks so sometimes it runs at 2000 rmp and others at less than 500 and it dies. I would just like help adjusting everthing and finding a site that has a digram as to what i need to mess with. Any help on the situation would be appreciated. Thanks
Joel
On the passenger side of the carb you should see a black cap that is about the size of a paint spray can cap. It is mounted sideways. This is the choke thermostat. Once you find it you should see that it is held down by a metal band with 3 screws. Loosen up the screws and you should be able to rotate the thermostat.
This is how I adjust it. With the engine cold push the gas pedal to the floor one time. This sets the choke. Now rotate the thermostat until the choke butterfly on top of the carb is ~1/8 inch from the closed position. Tighten the screws. All of this is done with the engine off. Now you can crank the truck and the engine should go to a high idle until it warms up.
It sounds as if your choke may be sticking. Buy a can of carb cleaner and spray the choke linkage down real well.
The first question i would ask is does it look like a normal carb or does it have square instead of round venturi's indicating a variable venturi carberator, venturi's being what you see on the top of your carb near the front, ie two square things or one sort of rectangular flat shaped thing. the later would indicate a choke plate on a motorcraft carb easier to diagnose and repair, the previous being beyond the scope of the average dyi without experienced guidence.
