i have a c-6 tranny that shift fine when its cold but after it warms up it slips realy bad going from first to second. its in a 4x4 and in the snow i realy had to stand on to get through couldn't hardly spin a tire in two foot of snow
anybody have any ideas what the problem may be
I'd start with adjusting the bands. I think you have two adjustments for two different bands and they should be small pegs on the sides. I think the torque is 10# and/or back off 1.5 turns, you'd have to check with the book.
I assume you've checked the fluid condition and level. also check for cracked/ worn line for vac back to modulator.
What happens if you shift manually from 1st to 2cd? When you say slips, it flares when you apply power? Check the fluid, if it is dark coloured and smells burnt, shes done. Adjusting the band may work for a while. Tighten to 120 inlbs. and back off 2 turns. The adjustment is located by the shift linkage area. If the flare happens during the auto shift the servo piston may be leaking by. If the transmission has lots of time on it, it probably needs a overhaul.
If the fluid was burnt you will need a overhaul. Was there debris in the pan? If it slips in second gear the band is toast. To get at it involves opening the trans, so you might as well do it all at the same time. Hope this helps, Don
On the left side of the trans above the shift linkage is a stud with a lock nut. Loosen the lock nut a few turns, turn in the stud and torque to 15" lbs, back out 3/4 to 1 full turn, hold the stud from turning and tighten lock nut. 3/4 turn would be the minimum or you will bind up during shifts and cause unecessary band wear. Make sure the jamb nut is tight like 50+ ft/lbs. The jamb nut has a sealing compound on the bottom to prevent leaks, it should be replaced when disturbed. In your situation you want to see if the box can be saved. Are you running a radiator alone or radiator plus remote cooler? If you use a high torque to tighted down the intermedate band stud you will flex the case and get a false adjustment. Good luck. Carl....=o&o>........
jd, if you didn't do long durations slip tests, only a second or two you might be ok. You can make alot of heat real fast aka burnt oil and clutch material. Follow above post on adjusting and report back. Carl....=o&o>....
How do you know if the trans is slipping? I can feel her shift when i hit 45 with the 300-6. Thats the only time i feel her shift unless i give it gas to move then let back off and she shifts back down a gear.
To check the fluid, the dipstick say check while hot and in park,do i drive around for a bit for it to warm up or just crank the engine and let it run for a while then check? I checked it cold (circa. 30F outside) and the fluid is in the normal range and looks clean, but this was at 5 in the morning with a flashlight. I did'nt smell it because i didnt know you needed to check for a burnt smell. Thanks.
