Anyone know where to get Brake Dust Shields for the Escape that go between the rotor and wheel? I'm getting tired of looking at my brown brake dust covered wheels.
I don't have an answer, but would like to know if others are experiencing alot of brake dust build up on their wheels. I've had my Escape for 7 months now, and other than the brake dust have not needed to wash the vehicle frequently. And when I'm driving around and see another Escape, I don't see brake dust on their wheels. So either they don't have a problem, or they wash theirs weekly.
My Escape builds up brake dust quickly too. I have noticed that most of the other Escapes are the same. I'm curious if it has anything to do with the caliper being on the front of the rotor? I don't know if this would result in more brake dust. Anyway, becareful with brake dust shields. I've tried using them on two other cars, and both of them had to get new rotors because they warped.
My daughter's Escape has the same dust problem. I found a site ....... www.openroadint.com/EBC.htm ....... I called them at 877-673-6960 about EBC brake pads, which are dustfree and was told that EBC would probably have pads available in Dec.
This fix may be a little more detailed than shields, but I don't care for the idea of covering up a problem. BTW FMC and the dealer just shrugged their shoulders when we called to complain about their junk brake pads. The FMC comment was "all brakes do that". Funny, my F-150 doesn't do it. .................Every Escape owner should call the FMC customer service hot line to complain and then maybe a fix will be offered.
Brake dust, brake squeal and brake issues are problems many manufactures have. There is such a fine balance between the customers concerns and cost effective brake systems. Chances are if your vehicle experiences heavy brake dust build up it's because the brake pad material was changed to prevent a brake squeal issue.
Try changing your stock brake pads with aftermarket pads from an auto parts store. You might get lucky and reduce the dust with out added brake squeal. A brake engineer just keeps changing parts until they find a combination that they think the customers will like and meets the cost objectives.
I just purchased a 2002 XLT with the no boundaries package. It has 16" wheels and the dealer is only 3 miles from my house and when I got home there was a lot of brake dust all over the rims. It appears to slow down after a few rain storms, but it is a nusiance problem...please let me know of an easy fix ok. The new roof rack is really nice as well.
I put brake dust sheilds on my 2001 Escape two weeks ago - it's amazing - the wheels and tires are still clean! They are Kleen Wheels. Now I can do something other than clean the brake dust off the wheels every weekend.
