My grandfather (dads side) was left a complete estate by a hermit with basiacally no one else to leave it to. Turns out he was an interesting guy... I didnt get to go to the first day of cleaning it out for fears of asthma+old dirty should be condemned house, so I didnt get the best pick, but my brother came home with some nice sony speakers, a stop sign from an unopened box of 3, a marantz tuner, and many other things. After I started helpin out we continued finding more and more. Turns out this guy would just buy whatever was on sale or the big item of the week and just set it somewhere ( he also liked the home shopping network type things, which was funny because we found a handheld TV and turned it on and it was on the home shopping network). Most things were unopened, or never used, like his convection microwave, a set of nice flashlights with rubber all over the outside and plenty others. He had 3 electric wheelchairs, 2 of whic worked, 1 of those he bought for 5,000 (receipt still with the chair). The interesting items continued to be discovered, like a red plush headboard, a complete antique kitchen (the stovetop covers were sealed to it with generations of gunk) and his entire playboy collection. By far though, the most fun thing to find was all the dead rats and snakes.
I found that someone had broken into my truck last week and stolen some of my tools. I also found my glow plug relay to be bad. The list goes on forever.
I've never been quite that lucky. Two different stories with smaller sums.
First was in Chicago in the early 60's, at the amusement park when I was about 7 years old. Rode a roller coaster and while getting out of the car found a wallet. Thought I was gonna be rich until my dad took it. Seems it was his!
Second, while working a booth at the Colorado State Fair a few years ago, a customer gave us a bunch of $1 bills to pay for his purchase. We make it a habit to count out money we receive and give back as change. As my dad counted the money, he found a $100 bill in the middle of all the $1's. The guy was starting to walk away, dad asked him if it was his tip. Needless to say the guy was pretty happy and relieved.
I'd say due to the circumstances, keep the money without hesitation. As someone said, make sure the serial numbers aren't all the same. It used to be quite common for people to go to the bank and request new bills with consecutive serial numbers to give as gifts. As long as they're real............
heck id keep it! ive found a few tools before, a couple of shotgun shells, female hygeine products (new at least, still in the package) best thing i ever found was a parts car i brought home had a snap-on 3/8 drive air ratchet in the glove box.
I found a ring at a gas station one many years back, and I asked the persons inside if anyone has dropped the ring, they all said no, and it was no ones at the pumps eather, so I just turned it into the police. (It was a fake gold ring)
If you dont feel safe/right keeping the money, Send it to me and I'll dispose of it properly...... I found a dead bird in my air cleaner intake, must've gotten in there at work and never got out.
jeeze, now another one of your guys's stories reminded me...
when i was about 8 ( 14 years ago ) i found a wallet, which was REALLY thick... picked it up, shoulda kept my mouth shut cause being 8 at the time i didnt have much money, mentioned it to my dad and he turned it into the restaurant owners. well, wallets with ID's in them are best to be turned in, its only right.
