Thinking about installing two rear facing work lights mounted above my tool box in the bed of my truck. Has anyone done anything like this and how did it turn out? Planning on installing a relay with a switch located inside the cab. Thanks for the input.
What size lights are you talking about? I have mounted some under the rear bumper to make them less obvious. If you are looking for better lighting than that you can get some telescoping lights that you can manipulate a little more.
I had some mounted on my roll bar on another truck, and just turned them around and pointed back towards where I wanted. I had to make sure my engine was running because even with it running, it ran down my battery, boy was it bright. I'm lucky that my new F250 has dual batteries and 2 alternators. But at this time do not have anything that would even get close of lugging down my battery. Make sure you can get it high enough to go over your truck bed or tail gate, other wise it will cast a shadow. Just my .02 cents worth...
dlevey, I think I am leaning more towards developing some kind of telescoping set-up so that I can raise the point of light projection a little bit when needed. The lights I happen to have from another project are two 55-watt halogen tractor lamps for a 12 volt system such as a heavy duty truck.
kawika, I'm in the same boat you are about having two batteries, but only one alternator at this point. Do you currectly have lights installed like we are talking about. I'm interested in how some of you may have wired everything in. I've been thinking that maybe there is an extra relay left open from the factory that I can just use instead of having to add another and then run it throught a switch inside of the cab.
I plan on useing the lights for night work and more light when setting up camp and parking my fifth-wheel.
I do not have any lights on this truck that is not stock. I decided to get a cap and I will NOT drill any holes into my truck (yet). On my old truck I bought a set of KC light and it came with all the wiring and relays. All I had to do was mount the lights and find a good power feed, place the On/Off switch. Grounded the lights near the mounting points. Never thought you could get a too bright of lights, but when off roading, turning on those lights lit up the cab of the truck like it was the middle of the day. Could see for miles...
