My son's truck (90000 miles) has developed a high pitched squeak coming from the engine compartment. My first thought was to replace the serpentine belt, since it was the original. So I did, but still have the noise. A fellow told me to replace the camshaft syncronizer - an electrical part?- and I have no idea what he is referring to. Any other ideas as well?

Did you get it figured out?
The synchronizer is the piece that replaced the distributor at the front of the engine. It looks like a cut off distributor with a Camshaft Position Sensor attached to the top of it. I haven't seen one of these squeel on a 4.2 but have seen a couple on 3.8s in Windstars and it's basically the same engine.
If you remove the belt and then use a long screwdriver or something as a stethoscope you should be able to tell if the noise is from the synchronizer or not.
If that's where the noise is coming from you'll probably have to replace it. It has to be lined up exactly right when it's replaced. You may want to get a shop to do that or if you decide to tackle it yourself I can give you some more instructions.
A 4.2 is just a stroked 3.8 and have seen this noise on 3.8 Mustangs and Windstars and 4.2 F-150s.Sounds like bad bearing type noise at water pump BUT it is prob the cam synchronizer. This is for the timing of the fuel injectors so it must be put back in exactly with proper alignment tool.Sync. that squeal a lot sometimes set a engine code- sometimes without lighting check engine light.Racerguy hit the nail on the head.I usually replace sync. and cam sensor(elec.) which bolts on top of it(2 small bolts-screws)
