My Mountaineer has 111,000 miles, has been a clean machine. Today I noticed a few spots in the drive, a reddish brown fluid that had leaked. I got under the truck and noticed some of the same dripping down under the radiator. I can't tell if it is transmission fluid (why would it be there?) or power steering fluid. Both seem to check OK for a good level. Any ideas? I'm due for an oil change anyway, maybe they can tell where it is coiming from?
It could be tranny fluid, coming from the fittings on the radiator for the internal tranny cooler lines; I would check there first. If that's it you can try tightening the line nuts, but USE TWO WRENCHES so you don't tear out the radiator fittings.
It could also be anti-freeze IF you are using the red stuff. If you're using green, then it's probably trans fluid or PS. Get a can of brake clean and squirt everything down and let dry. You should be able to find the leak pretty quickly.
the guys who changed my oil yesterday told me that it was coming from my oil pan, and that it was nothing to worry about. Well, there is another spot today, and it is just red. The oil I use is a dura-blend, is it red? I have never seen them put it in.
Your fan and wind turbulence from driving wouldn't normally blow an oil pan leak FORWARD onto the radiator; if the drips continue from the radiator area, that's where the leak is. Tranny fluid is tinted red for easy leak identification; some oils are amber-colored but I don't know about Valvoline. BTW, did this info come from a Ford dealer or a quick-lube outfit?

That is what I was thinking about, there is some oily residue on the carriage behind the leak, like it was blown back there. The info came from the same guy who has been changing the oil on this Mtnr since 1999. I don't trust them to be mechanics, but I asked him to look while he was down there, I can't get all the way under the vehicle to take a good look. I guess I need to break down and go stand in line and be abused by my local Ford Service Department
