i have a 97 f150 with a blown headgasket on the RH side that leaks oil onto the exhaust. i realize this is a common problem and am wondering if the head needs to be changed or if simply changing the headgasket will suffice.
does anybody know the part # of the updated gasket. i asked a parts person at the local dealer and he looked at me with confusion. thanks
A revised head gasket should do it, but I'd take the head to a machine shop and have them check it for warpage.
It shouldn't cost too much and would be cheap insurance. Pulling the head(s) isn't too difficult, but it is very time consuming. So paying a few bucks now is better than having to pull the head off again due to a leak.
Also make sure you are very careful when removing the head that you don't nick the surface. Pull the head straight off the block and sit it on it's end or have a piece of cardboard ready to lay it down on.
