intermitent "check engine" light

I just purchased 94 Ranger XLT (2.3L) 63000 miles manual transmission. Every so often the "check engine" light comes on and then after a while goes off. The fluids are all topped off. Any ideas on what it could be? Thanks.

Most likely, your EEC computer is receiving an occasional signal that is out of the expected range from one of the sensors. As soon as the signal is back within range the light goes off. The usual procedure is to "read" your codes from the computer to see if the error was retained in memory. Need to get a code reader from your local parts monger (NAPA, Carquest, Autozone, DAP)and follow the instructions. After counting light flashes or listening to beeps you may know which sensor is at fault. Not always a pure science but works most of the time.
