ARGH!My 88 2.9 4x4 had been running fine for a long time.I went to pick up my parents from a party and the truck sat for about half an hour.went to start it, it ran for about 3 seconds then burbled to a stall. It cranks over and sounds like it wants to start but never did.Quickly lost cranking power.Ligkts and every thing else works but gives dead battery symptoms when i try to start it.this is something that happend right away..no warning or nuthin.I replaced the Module on the back of the distributor last year. Faulty inertia switch or computer ground? Need Help!Gotta work on tuesday
Way to ruin a perfect weekend..
check alternator, and ground cable to batt.
maybe a short somewhere. have you done anything lately wiring related
can you hear the pumps when you crank rarely inertia switch fails but could happen
i tightend and cleaned up some ground wires and took the corroded connection out of the computer ground wire at the battery and ran a solid wire. Maybe the coil? What kind of modules or wires are common problems?
Mine kind of did that. Similar type of symptoms. Take the shroud off of the steering column, and check for a white peice of plastic, about 2.5"x.75"x3". It is located belows and in front where you put your keys in.
If it is loose then you will be able to push it up and use a screw driver to push the metal tabs that hold it in place back into position, so it holds it tight. My metal tabs ended up breaking off (dont ask) and I have a zip tie holding it in place now...
The battery might need a charge/replacement for the cranking problem. Do the lights dim when you try to crank it? Have you tried recharging the battery?
For the no-start after you get it cranking, check for spark and fuel pressure, or listen for the pumps running for a few seconds after the key is turned on. Also check the inertia switch, it might have tripped.
well, I swapped in another inertia switch and she fired up.the old one didn't click when i pushed the reset button unlike the new one so it probably was on its way out.
As for the battery..I boosted it but when it was not cranking all other ligts were fine maybe a bad ground somewhere or something..
But Thanks a bunch for your response and help..I love my ford.....for another week anyways
